College of Dentistry

The College of Dentistry offers the DDS Program for students interested in the Dentistry Profession.


HOW TO APPLY

Applications for the Autumn 2010 DDS Program will be available until September 15.


The application process is initiated through the Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS). A supplemental application is sent directly from the College of Dentistry.

  • AADSAS Application: Complete the application electronically via the web at https://portal.aadsasweb.org/

  • Supplemental Application: An online supplemental application is required and will be forwarded by the College of Dentistry.

DEADLINES

Submit application to AADSAS on or after June 1, but no later than September 15 of the year preceding anticipated enrollment.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

The College of Dentistry evaluates the following items when determining an applicant's admissibility:

  • Academic performance: applicants should have an overall GPA of "B" or better (recent entering class had 3.6 overall GPA; 3.5 science GPA)
  • Bachelor's degree, prior to admission is preferred; however, an applicant must complete a minimum of 90 quarter hours (60 semester hours) at an accredited four-year college or university. Specific undergraduate major that focuses on a strong science core such as biology or chemistry is beneficial.
  • Specific prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better prior to applying. Click on the following link for a listing of these required prerequisites: http://dent.osu.edu/admissions/course_requirements.php.
  • Dental Admission Test (DAT) score of 19 or better. Effective January 2007, applicants who have taken the DAT exam three or more times must apply for special permission to take this test again.
  • Two letters of recommendation submitted as part of the AADSAS application; one should be from a college science professor - someone who has worked closely with you and is able to write about your academic qualities; and one should be from someone who has first-hand knowledge of your personal qualities and characteristics such as dentists observed or employers. Additional letters from congressmen, senators, governors, mayors, alumni or members of the clergy are not helpful.
  • Observation hours - minimum of 20 hours of observation with a general dentist.

COSTS / FEES / DEPOSITS

Costs

These estimates are meant to provide a guideline for students enrolling for the 2007-2008 school year. The estimated expenses for the first three quarters in the College of Dentistry include:

*1. University tuition and fees includes general and instructional tuition; activity, COTA, recreation and equipment fees.
*2. Living expenses include housing, utilities, food, clothing, local transportation, and other miscellaneous expenses for 12 months. Off-campus housing may be more expensive for a single student living alone.

  • Domestic - $60
  • International - $70


Acceptance fee (non refundable)

$25 acceptance fee is required upon admission.


Deposit (non refundable)

$475 deposit is required upon admission and is applied toward the first quarter's tuition.

DENTAL ADMISSION TEST (DAT)

DENTAL ADMISSION TEST (DAT) is required of all applicants. DAT registration materials are available at:

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

International applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to fulfill the TOEFL, MELAB or IELTS requirement. If your native language is not English, you should possess a level of English proficiency which is demonstrated by minimum scores as follows:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
    • 577 (Paper-based test)
    • 233 (Computer-based test)
    • 79 (Internet-based test)
  • OR

  • MELAB (Michigan Language Assessment Battery)
    • 79
  • OR

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
    • 6.5
