How To Apply
   
 

Applications for the Autumn 2009 DVM Program will be available only through the centralized VMCAS application service until October 2.


The application process for all applicants is initiated through the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS). All applicants will be sent an email in September with a link to the required supplemental application.

  • VMCAS Application: Complete the application electronically via the web at http://www.aavmc.org/vmcas/vmcas.htm.

  • Supplemental application: The link to the online supplemental application will be forwarded via email by the College of Veterinary Medicine to all applicants who apply through VMCAS and designate The Ohio State University. In the meantime, please submit all official transcripts to the Professional Admissions Office, The Ohio State University, P.O. Box 182003, Columbus, OH 43218-2003.

    Three references are required of which two (2) must be completed by veterinarians. If all three references were sent through VMCAS, please do not send additional references. However, if you did not send the required references through VMCAS, please use the Veterinary Reference Form below.

Admission Criteria
   
 

The College of Veterinary Medicine uses selective admission procedures. Criteria for admission are determined by an Admissions Committee. Applicants are evaluated on academic profiles and certain non-cognitive factors including motivation, character, communication and interpersonal skills, personality, leadership ability, animal exposure, and knowledge of the profession. Please see criteria list below, however, specific requirements may change annually. It is the candidate's responsibility to know and comply with the correct procedures and guidelines for admission.

  • Successful completion of required prerequisite courses with a C or better*
  • Grade-point average**
  • Minimum GRE of 1000 (verbal, quantitative, and analytical sections combined) or minimum MCAT of 24, O-T
  • Three personal references (two must be from veterinarians)
  • Minimum of 80 hours of work experience with one veterinarian

*Prerequisite Courses
The College of Veterinary Medicine does not recommend any specific pre-professional or undergraduate degree program. Although a bachelor's degree is not a prerequisite for admission, prospective applicants are encouraged to enroll in degree programs of their choosing while taking the required pre-veterinary courses or their equivalents. **Grade-Point Average
The grade-point average (GPA) for admission is not absolute; however, Ohio and West Virginia residents with a 3.00 average or above (4.00=A), and non-Ohio residents with a 3.40 average or above will be given preferential consideration by the Admissions Committee. Applicants with a GPA less than 2.8 will not be considered at all.

The average GPA for the 2008 entering class was 3.6 and the average GRE score was 1229.

**Interview
The Admissions Committee will schedule interviews with selected applicants. A consultation for unsuccessful candidates is encouraged and is available by contacting the Office of Student Affairs.

Costs

These estimates are meant to provide a guideline for students enrolling in the 2007-2008 academic year. The estimated cost for the first three quarters includes:

*1. University tuition and fees includes general and instructional tuition; activity, COTA and recreation fees.
*2. Books and instruments: Students must procure the textbooks, uniforms, and instruments needed for their personal use in laboratories, dispensaries, and clinics.

Living expenses include housing, utilities, food, clothing, local transportation, and other miscellaneous expenses for 12 months.

  • Domestic - $40
  • International - $50


Acceptance fee (non-refundable)

$25 acceptance fee is required upon admission.


Deposit (non-refundable)

  • Ohio Residents: None
  • West Virginia and Non-Ohio Residents: $300 non-refundable deposit is required upon admission and is applied toward the first quarter's tuition

English Language Requirement
   
 

International applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to fulfill the TOEFL, MELAB or IELTS requirement. If your native language is not English, you should possess a minimum level of English proficiency which is demonstrated by minimum scores as follows:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
    • 577 (Paper-based test)233 (Computer-based test)
    • 90-91 (Internet-based test)
  • OR

  • MELAB (Michigan Language Assessment Battery)
